This program is open to BSN prepared RNs with a CNOR, advanced practice nurses or students currently in an advanced practice graduate program. Students are required to purchase the core curriculum for the RNFA (AORN) text. After registering and receiving the payment notification email, payment must be made within 72 hours. For N611 - $132 Typhon Software Fee will be applied. Online Course: $824 per credit plus $25 per credit technology fee. Weekly only exercises and reflection journaling are required to guide the student through this clinical experience. The use of an online software, Typhon will allow to students to not only document their hours, but to document procedures and clinical experiences. Students are required to complete 270 hours with their identified preceptor(s). The second course N611 is focused on the practicum experience. The last live class provides a suturing workshop. Simulation exercises in our new Carlin OR simulation suite at the UMass Chan Medical school address sterile technique, identification of minor/major surgical instrumentation as well as elements of chole laparoscopy. The live classes will emphasize a hands-on component of the weekly online modules. There are 3 live all day classes that take place on Saturdays. The first, N610 is theory based and is offered as a blended course. Consistent with the guidelines put forth by the AORN, our program consists of two 3 credit graduate courses. Assisting with the positioning of patients' bodies to protect against nerve damage or circulation impairment and assessing the patients' body conditions after surgery.
Applying sutures, staples, clips, and drainage systems and clamping, or cauterizing blood vessels to control bleeding.Adjusting and maintaining the operating room temperature, humidity, and lighting according to the Surgeon's specifications.Determining the availability and inspecting sterile and non-sterile surgical equipment, tools, and supplies.Covering patients with surgical drapes to ensure and maintain a sterile operating field, removing patients' body hair, and disinfecting the incision site.Assisting with patient resuscitation during cardiac arrests or other life-threatening events.You should also demonstrate technical skills and a strong working knowledge of surgical tools and equipment and basic medical tasks. To be a successful surgical assistant, you should be a good team player, with strong communication and interpersonal skills. The surgical assistant's responsibilities include applying dressings, sterilizing the operation site, inserting tubes and intravenous lines, providing pre and post-operative care to patients, and completing some clerical work such as record keeping and handling the phones.
